One Finished UFO!

Right after dinner tonight I hurry-scurried into my quilt studio and managed to finish hand sewing the binding of this baby quilt I've been working on for . . . forever? Nah, I think it just feels that way.

The lavender/lilac/purple fabrics in the quilt have proven very difficult to photograph. These shots were the best I could do so you'll just have to believe me that it's much prettier in person. Honest.

I started the quilt by choosing this pretty little flower on the yellow background. I ended up using this fabric as the backing also. I knew I wanted to use some lavender and I immediately found two fabrics in my stash that filled the bill. If you look closely you'll see that the flowers have a pink center.

I struggled and struggled to find a pink fabric that looked good with the lavenders but as I neared the point of going cross-eyed and drooling, I finally gave up and decided to go with only the two lavenders.

The block pattern I chose is an old one. It's called Grandmother's Pride and I used a size of 7-1/2". I made twelve blocks, laid them out in rows of three across and four down, added some sashing and I had the center of the quilt. Then I repeated the yellow print for the borders. I was going to use one of the lavender fabrics for the binding but saw that it detracted from the center of the quilt so went with a repeat of the yellow.

Finished size of this baby quilt is 33" x 41". The fabric and batting are 100% cotton. It's most likely going to be sent to a girl baby due to be born this spring.

Now on to another UFO I've had hidden away for too long. (This is fun!)

Beautiful! I'm glad you went with the yellow binding, it makes the purple & lavender "pop" It will be one lucky baby to receive that quilt.
Your on a roll! Can't wait to see what you finish next

Hi Mama Pea ~ I'm with Katidids that the yellow help the purples 'pop' and is perfect for the binding. This is a beautiful baby quilt and does it almost have a 'vintage' feel? Maybe it's the block pattern you chose, maybe it's the beautiful yellow with flower fabric.... but whatever it is it is really very beautiful. Doesn't it feel good to knock out those UFO's?!

Wait .... another post in less than a week? Another drink for me, please!!! You must be enjoying yourself in the "quilt room". Good for you. For anyone new to quilting, this would be a great post to read because you took us though your thought process of block choice, color, fabric, and binding. Some little girl is going to be very lucky to receive this.

Beautiful! That calico is so sweet. I think sticking with the lavenders was a good choice. Pinks especially seem to be tough to match. And they don't seem to make the same ones every year! Who would have thought that some variation of pink can to in or out of style. Good choices and well done.

Erin - Yup, I don't know exactly what it is about fabric but sometimes (most of the time?) the colors come through in the photos so "off!" Frustrating!

Katidids - I'm back in the quilt room tomorrow . . . and I am so eager for another day in there!

Sparkless - Wonder how long I could stay in there if I locked it from my side??

Jen - Thanks, Jen! I still like it a lot but I'm glad it's done!

Lisa - I've always had a passion for the "old" blocks which this one I used is, of course. I could quilt with nothing but these old block patterns and never tire of them. On to another UFO tomorrow!

Karen L. - Thanks for your kind words and encouragement, as always! (The smelling salts are in the mail.)

Leigh - I could hardly believe how BAD all the pinks I tried looked. Guess the pink addition was not meant to be. Thank you for you complimentary words!
